Baltal Route
The Baltal route is a shorter and more direct route to the Amarnath cave temple, preferred by many pilgrims for its convenience and relatively easier terrain. The journey begins from Baltal, a small town located near Sonamarg in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir. Pilgrims trek through rugged mountain paths and cross the treacherous Mahagunas Pass to reach the cave temple. The trek from Baltal is approximately 14 kilometers long and can be completed in a shorter duration compared to the Pahalgam route.
Pahalgam Route
This is the traditional and longer route to reach the Amarnath cave temple. The journey starts from Pahalgam, a picturesque town in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. Pilgrims trek through lush green valleys, dense forests, and challenging mountain terrain, passing through landmarks such as Chandanwari, Sheshnag, Panchtarni, and Sangam. The trek from Pahalgam is approximately 36 kilometers long and takes several days to complete.
These are the two main routes taken by pilgrims during the Amarnath Yatra. Each route offers a unique experience and challenges, allowing pilgrims to immerse themselves in the spiritual journey while marveling at the natural beauty of the Himalayan region. Additionally, helicopter services are available from both Pahalgam and Baltal, providing an alternative option for those seeking a faster and more convenient way to reach the cave temple.
